USB Users Fault Finding Document for Alcatel Speedtouch USB Device
The situation the engineer has been and gone, you’ve being told it all works what do I do?
Initial Connection

You require a username and password from your ISP.

You require a driver CD for the Alcatel modem. The BT Engineer should have left one, if it’s not
marked AC02 v1.2.2. DO NOT use this but download the correct driver from the web at
Alcatel Drivers v1.2.2

Check the Modem is NOT connected to your PC, if it is remove the lead from the USB port.

Install the software drivers from a CD or the downloaded zip. (By installing with the modem disconnected
you ensure that when it is plugged in the OS will autodetect the device).

After the software has installed a reboot is suggested, this just makes sure your PC is in a nice clean
state.

Connect the leads for the Alcatel device.

Windows should autodetect the new device and hopefully set everything up for you.

Now you have a choice if your ISP has supplied software you can install this to configure the software
if not you can configure the connection by hand.
Setting up Dialup Networking

Double click the My Computer Icon

Double click on ‘’Make New Connection’’ icon.

The ‘Make New Connection’ window should appear, enter a name for the connection, e.g. DSL
Modem Connection, then select the USB ADSL SpeedTouch Modem in the select a device list. Then
Click Next

Enter any number in the phone number section, this is not dialed, it is simply required so dialup networking
will let you proceed. Make sure the country selected is the correct one, i.e. United Kingdom.
Click Next.

Click Finish

A new Icon should appear in the Dialup Networking window.

Right click on the DSL Modem Connection icon and select Properties in the menu that appears.

Select the Server Types Tab
-
Ensure that Log on to Network and Enable Software Compression are not checked.

In the Allowed Network Protocols area, ensure that only TCP/IP is checked.

Click OK to complete this stage.
Connecting to your ISP.

Double click the appropriate Dialup Networking icon, e.g. DSL Modem Connection.

The connect to window should appear enter your username and password, check the ‘Save Password’
to esnure that your password is remember for the occassion.

Click connect, in a few seconds the MS DUN icon should appear in the system tray, and it should reflect
the amount of network traffic.

You can now start to browse.
What can go wrong
There are many problems that can occur with the Alcatel USB ADSL connection, they are down many varied
reasons, the main areas are

Configuration of connection on PC

Driver control of the USB modem

Synchronisation over the ADSL line between your modem and the exchange

Exchange hardware
-
BTIgnite network linking the exchange to your ISP. This is provided using an ATM network that does not
appear on ‘tracert’ commands.

BTIgnite router at the ISP’s premises

The ISP’s internal network.
