Speedtouch 510 v4 PPTP Relay Guide

PPTP Relay is another mode the 510 v4 modem has for presenting a single Internet IP address to a computer, PPTP relay is generally more reliable than DHCP_Spoof mode.

Basically this mode involves setting up a local VPN connection to the router, so any device capable of creating a PPTP VPN connection is able to use the mode.

How to do it

Best route is to initially reset the 510v4 back to its default configuration, and ensure you can see the router at http://10.0.0.138/.

Next check that you are getting assigned an IP address dynamically from the router, on your computer look at the network connections window and check that both the IP and DNS options are set to automatic as shown below.

The next step is to upload the UKPPtP.ini configuration file, download the file and tell the software you Have a Disk and browse to where the file was downloaded. Alternatively you can use the web configuration tools to do the same e.g.

Using the web configuration

Using the configuration software

Now click the Upload button, and the router should upload the new configuration and present the screen. Click Accept and the router should think for a few seconds and then return you to the web based setup.

Once the software is uploaded the configuration of the router should look something like

Router config with PPTP Relay file in place

Once the router has the configuration in place, the next step is creating the PPTP VPN connection on the computer.

Creating the VPN Connection on the computer

This example uses Windows XP, the actual VPN is a standard PPTP connection with no encryption used. No encryption is safe as it is just across your local LAN. The SpeedTouch router will remain visible on 10.0.0.138 at all times.

Select the New Connection Wizard

Tell the New Connection Wizard that it is a VPN you are creating

Give it a name, so that the connection can be opened later

Give it the IP address of the SpeedTouch router NOTE: Should be 10.0.0.138 if the instructions are followed, if you give it the wrong IP this can be corrected later by editing the connection properites e.g.

That is the wizard completed.

Provide your ADSL accounts username and password

Press the properties button and ensure that Require Data Encryption is turned off.

Once the VPN has authenticated then you are logged into your ISP. This can be verified by using an IPCONFIG /ALL command at the DOS prompt, for example:
